Positive Psychology

My first year at Georgetown has been anything but ordinary. During these uncertain times, I have learned more about myself and how to stay positive throughout times with seemingly no hope. Here is what I’ve learned about positivity and some tips for learning to the enjoy the hard times.

Music has been proven to boost mood and moral. Harry Styles and his new album Fine Line has been my go to tool to make me happier throughout the day. During quarantine I have found that going for drives, particularly during the time around sunset, while singing upbeat happy songs such as Golden linked above, increase my desire to do good for others as I am happy and positive.

I am extremely thankful for the push that Flourishing has given me into journaling. While I will go into detail of my gratitude journal on a the “Thankful” page of my domain, journaling was a big part of maintaining a positive attitude during the pandemic.

It has been very helpful for me to think about the great times that I am going to have in the future when thinking about the present gets too frustrating. For example I imagine the swim seasons I am going to have someday being able to represent the school of my dreams, which is motivating to continue through this difficult time that is not as fun.

My best piece of advice in order to live positively, especially during this time, is to not take yourself too seriously. Finding silly ways to have fun and lean on others without stress was the best way for me to forget about all of the bad things going on and focus on the people that make me happy. This video is my roommates and I forgetting about the stress of the midterms that had gone on that day and leaning on each other to have a laugh.
